Mahovlich now has 20 goals to lead the NHL.
The Leafs took a 2-1 lead early in the third period on a goal from Ron Ellis, but the surging Red Wings (14-5-8) were not to be denied, netting three pucks in less than seven minutes to take a 4-2 lead.
The Red Wings have lost once in their past 15 games (8-1-6).
Dave Keon fired a wrist shot past Roger Crozier with Toronto goalie Bruce Gamble pulled for an extra attacker late in the third period. The goal at 19:17 brought Toronto to within one goal.
Garry Unger gave the Red Wings their first lead at 5:20 of the third period when he deflected a shot off the stick of Nick Libett past Gamble.

The Red Wings only had one power play in the entire game, but they made the best of it when Mahovlich---who else---slapped a shot over Gamble's right shoulder to tie the game, 2-2, at 3:55 of the third stanza.
"I don't talk to him a-tall," Red Wings coach Sid Abel said of his sniper. "When a fella is that hot you don't dare say anything."
Toronto's Mike Walton opened the scoring 10:13 into the second period on a Maple Leafs power play, converting a pretty pass from Paul Henderson to the right of Crozier.
A little less than three minutes later, Dea scored his third goal in as many games to knot the score.
Crozier made 41 saves on the night.
"I can't say enough about our goaltending," Abel said.
